Research: Professor R. Freeman Butts

Professor R. Freeman Butts (May 14, 1910 – March 19, 2010) was born in Springfield Illinois. Butts received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He also received a PhD in 1935 from the University of Wisconsin. Butts became a professor of education at Teachers College in 1948. In pre war years Butts was interested in education and its relationship to society. After World War II Butts refocused his attention on international and comparative education. Butts was the head of the department of social and philosophical foundations from 1948 to 1958. He was the director of International Studies from 1955 to 1975. He ran the first Teachers College Afghanistan Project where Butts increased the number of schools and trained teachers in Afghanistan. He also served as the director of the Teachers College East Africa project, a pilot for the peace corps.
